Basic Computing
Basic Computing is your introduction to computers. By completing Basic Computing, members will have a better understanding of how a computer works, how to use a mouse,save your work files to folders and be better able to successfully move to software programs like Word, Excel, Publisher and the Internet. (Approx 6 Sessions)
The Basic Computing subject must generally be undertaken before any of the other courses. Potential members who already have basic computer experience can request to bypass this course component.
Windows XP or Vista
To use your computer efficiently and effectively, you must understand how the Windows operating system works. You will review setting personal preferences, file management, search and find and learn about other useful tools.
You will try Windows Media Player 11 and discover other useful programs which are provided as standard features of the Windows Operating System.(Approx 6 Sessions)
Word
Microsoft Word is a word processing package. You can use it for letters, lists, flyers, posters, cards, forms, reports and many of other projects. (Approx 10 to 20 Sessions)
The club offers Microsoft Word at both beginners and intermediate levels.
Graphics in Word
You can learn to insert your photos (from a CD) into a word document. The course will also increase your skills in using the toolbars to insert clip art and use wordart and drawing shapes and text boxes. You will need to be competent with both Windows and Microsoft Word. (Approx 10 Sessions)
Genealogy
The course will show you how to use the internet to assist with family history research and use the program "Family Tree Maker" to record every detail and to publish reports,documents, charts, or create a book as a professional record of your families geanealogy. ( Approx 15 Sessions)
Internet
The Internet is a global network of millions of computers providing the largest communication system in the world. It is an amazing information resource. You will discover information on almost any subject when you surf the net. (Approx 12 Sessions)
Emails
This course will also show you how to find an internet service provider (ISP) and manage and use email, using Outlook Express. (Approx 6 Sessions)
Prior to undertaking this course, you should be competent with Basic Computing and word processing software (for example Word Basic).
Publisher
Publisher is a powerful software program which can be used to create just about any look you want for almost any kind of publication, e.g. newsletter, greeting card, or a calendar.(Approx 20 Sessions)
Excel
Excel is a spreadsheet where data can be stored. Spread sheets are great for household budgets. (Approx 20 Sessions)
Don't worry if you have a different spreadsheet program. Once you learn Excel, you can use your knowledge to use practically any spreadsheet program.
PowerPoint
PowerPoint is a presentation program, useful for building a slide show of your favourite photos, or to complement a meeting, seminar or workshop. (Approx 20 Sessions)
Introduction to Digital Photography
Discover the basics of how digital cameras work, and the interface between cameras and computers. Learn how to use camera software. (Approx 5 Sessions)
Taking pictures: digital photography
You must have a digital camera for this course. Learn how to compose pictures and use all the features of your digital camera.
The course includes downloading from camera to computer; basic editing; printing filing / folders and taking pictures. (Approx 10 Session)
Photo Editing
Learn how to manipulate (or enhance) photos and other images, improve the quality of photos, make a scrapbook or a quirky picture. This Microsoft application used to be called Picture It. (new release is called Photo Standard) The course will be run at a pace to suit the individual ( as an indication 10 to 20 Sessions ).
This software is great for card making, presentations, posters and scrapbooks.
Movie Maker
Learn how to use movie maker to make interesting presentations of your favourite pictures of family or those special holiday trips with storyboards, video effects transitions and background music. (Approx 10 Sessions)
Special Interest Groups
We are always receptive to the formation of Special Interest Groups for members who are competent with basic software and the internet, and want to develop other computer related interests and share these with other members.
